___In writing 101 to demonstrate how I have progressed, I have prepared a writing portfolio. It will have what I have written this quarter that presents my strengths and weaknesses. Naturally, as the quarter went on, I have learned much from professor, Craig McKenney. His expertise and personal help has helped me come a long way in my writing.
___To end on a higher note, first I will discuss my weaknesses. My worst habit in my essays were being too conversational. I was too focused on having my voice in my writing. I was focused on this because in my previous years at high school I struggled with using my voice. As I focused more about my voice, I was distracted from the other qualities of writing. Being in writing 101 had brought me to this realization as much as others. One of these others would include writing in chronological order. In my essay number 1, to support my topic of bacon’s rebellion, I used unjust taxes as a way to justify how the British were hindering the American economy. When I used these examples I stated them out of order and referring to things I had said before. Being in writing101 helped me be orderly in my writing and gave better transitions in my writing. Which brings me to the next point of how my transitions in my papers were, well, so to say, there were none. In each paragraph I started a whole separate topic that had no relation to to my original thesis or previous paragraph. I was self consciously assuming that
people knew where I was going with my story. In writing 101, working on these habits have gotten me out of them. I know that I have learned a lot about writing, but I know there is still much to come.
___Though my weaknesses have affected my quality of writing tremendously, my strengths have equally effected my writing style. Along with my problem of being too conversational, it has also been complimented that I get ‘to the point.’ Naturally, I don’t want to “go around the world to get across the street,” (as my grandpa would say) to get to my point. I do this because it keeps a reader more interested to get to the justification sooner rather than, ‘use filler sentences.’ Another example of my strengths would be using different examples yet under the same topic. My goal when doing this is to create an argument good enough to [don’t build another point off of another.
___I have come very far in my writing this quarter. I feel like I have learned more than I ever thought I would before this class, but I know there is much more to discover.

An argument for American independence

___This speech is taken on the Pennsylvania square autumn 1772. Britain damn you! Here we are in 1772 and all Britain is doing is taxing our people and hindering our new country! How could they think to do this to us?! Do we not mean anything to them?! Well Britain, I got something to say, I’m not going to stand for this! So the hell with y’all Britain!!! I’m a maverick! I can’t afford to be loyal to you, because your ripping us off and I can barely support my family!!! There’s no power strong enough to hold us down now!
___Like our last riots for America, a conflict among us Pennsylvanians has been whether we American’s should have remained loyal to our mother country of Britain. Or be a patriot and fight for our own rights and independence in America! Yet the sorry side of us, argue that as Pennsylvanians, we should remain loyal for the, ‘chearful’ protection of Britain’, (Resolves of the Pennsylvania Assembly on the Stamp Act.) In that statement, the Brits have deceived us into thinking this a thoughtful consideration to America. However, it is not. Also in this statement, it says, “the Assemblies of this Province have, from Time to Time, whenever Requisitions have been made by his Majesty, for carrying on military Operations, for the Defence of America, most chearfully and liberally contributed their full Proportion of Men and Money for those Services,” also stated in the ‘Resolves of the Pennsylvania Assembly on the Stamp Act.’ On the other hand, however, we argue that, America needs patriotism for becoming independent According to this view, America needs ‘her’ own laws because it isn’t part of Britain, it has different circumstances and situations that require separate laws.
___As we stand here today in Pennsylvania, my vision is that someday America would have its’ own central government, and establishes American independence from Britain for us all! Though I know and agree my brothers that the battle against Britain will be tough, as Britain was very protective of America…I still stand by that America needs its’ independence. ‘each colony has it’s own right how to govern the people.’ (The American Promise,) I mention this to say to that America was a side project maybe not to be taken as serious as it should have been. Although some might object that Britain was ignoring them, I reply that they weren’t getting the true help they needed. The issue is important because without the desire of these patriots like you and I would have been, we wouldn’t have an America with freedom.
___To you loyalists, I ask, how do you put up with this? How could you remain loyal to Britain when they treat us unfairly and not equally? For those of you loyal to Britain I will read to you this “That all men are born equally free and independent, and have certain natural, inherent and inalienable rights, amongst which are, the enjoying and defending life and liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety.” These words come straight from our own Constitution of Pennsylvania! It is in our own constitution that we are to be treated as equals here, but Britain isn’t treating us as equals! Our own home country forcing us to give them our goods and crops for free because they call themselves our mother country?! Loyalists, I ask yourselves this, what kind of mother does this to their child? NONE!

___Geoffrey Meredith’s argument is that the more technology advances, the more people become illiterate. He says because of this, “[R]eading becomes a survival skill.” He also points out how a majority of the people who do have a formal education, despite their degrees, can’t fill out an employment form. For his last point, he says technology is compensating for illiteracy with programs such as Microsoft word that do automatic spell change along with correct syntax, grammar, paragraph structure, and spell check.
___In recent discussions of American illiteracy, a controversial issue has been whether if the people of America are compensating for illiteracy with technology. On the one hand, some argue that the American people are taking programs such as spell check for granted. From this perspective, people are becoming too dependent on programs such as this, that also suggest correct syntax, grammar and paragraph structure. On the other hand, however, others argue that America is becoming more dependent on literacy, because it is seem as a social standard. In today’s time, it is becoming that universities and colleges will only accept those who have a exceptional education. In the words of one of this main proponents, “[H]igh school and even college graduates, who , despite their degrees, can’t fill out a simple employment form.” According to this view, the American people are loosing their literacy because of technology. In sum then, the issue is whether if America is becoming illiterate because of technology or that the American people are becoming more literate because of it.

essay reflection # 2
_____Essay number 2 in comparison to #1 was a bit more difficult because of the restriction of using websites as sources. Though i concede that information was more legitimate compared to website sources. I felt like i could have used a bit more time working on the outline to make it more organized. To me this would have been easier to develop an argument and find more points.
_____In this essay i thought that justifying a patriot or loyalist party was a bit too specific to be researching on. In most documents that i found, they were irrelevant to patriotism in pennsylvania.

On the one hand, some argue that colonial Pennsylvanians should have remained loyalists for the ‘chearful’ protection of Britain, as stated in the, ‘Resolves of the Pennsylvania Assembly on the Stamp Act.’ From this perspective, it is deceived as a thoughtful consideration to America. The colony people are being informed that their being taken over by the British military. My own view is that the British didn't have the right to do this as a punishment for the east India tea incident. Though i see how they would be angry about this, I still maintain that British has no right to punish them. Although some might object that they didn't have the right to do this, i reply that the British has no hand in it so they should stay out of their business.

essay reflection # 1
In recent discussions of essay number one, a controversial issue has been whether if our writing process was helpful, or to our liking. from this perspective, people say it was because the essay didn't sound like themselves, or so to say, having no originality. On the other hand however argues that the writing process was bad, but the help from craig was useful. In the worlds of one of this view's main proponents, "hard but helpful." In sum, then, the issue is wheather the writing process was useful, or not.
My own view is that i liked the writing process. Though i concede that it may take away originality, i still maintain that it was very helpful to me. For example, i like how we followed the classic process of first topic, then outline, third rough draft, then finally final draft. Although some might object that this is not a good process, i reply that there is nothing wrong with this system as long as it works.

Thesis/Essay 1 Final Draft
_____Bacon’s rebellion was the effect of unjust taxes and lack of protetion by the English government. The English government
was taxing the Virginia people with so many taxes that the people were becoming miserably poor and desperate. On top of all
this the Indians were stealing their goods, and killing the Virginians. It was started in 1693 when William Berkeley was
appointed governor of Virginia. At the time he was a well respected man, but over time he became more and more greedy as
his personality characteristics changed. In the 1600’s Virginia was suffering under England’s government horrendously. The
English government was inflicting them with taxes that served no purpose, other than to prosper. One of these taxes that the
Virginians were being endured with was the Virginia poll tax.
_____The Virginia poll tax of 1645 had replaced the property tax. The poll tax was to tax people based on their income, but the
English government did quite the opposite. The poor were being taxed more than the rich. In document #7 of the royal
commissioners narrative states, “ [W]hereas there are some great persons both in honor rich in Estate and have several ways of
gains and profit [that] are exempted from paying Levies and the poorest inhabitants being compelled to pay the great taxes
which we are burdened with.” This means that people with a lot of land would be taxed less than the people without because
they had more ways of earning profit. I think in this situation it was not only wrong to tax the poor more than the rich, but it
was also stupid. If the English government were to tax the rich more, they would get more money out of them. This is only one
of the worst things the government did to its people, but not the only one. The next hinder of the Virginia people was the
trade taxes
_____An example of a poll tax trade would be the beaver trade, which outrageously over charging colonists for the price of
beaver fur. The only reason for this high priced fur, was simply because the English government had a monopoly on it. It was
hard for the colonists to pay these taxes and it felt like their government left them sitting in the dark.
_____An additional way to show that England’s government still did care about the settlers in the new world with their unjust
taxes was they gave them a law called, ‘The Navigation Laws.’ This law was directed to the planters. For a long time the
planters were very prosperous through their tobacco culture, some became very wealthy from it. Soon enough the navigation
laws were passed and required that the planters should buy from England all the European goods that might be needed, and
should bring them over to Virginia in English ships. The effect was to compel the settlers to sell their tobacco at whatever price
the English merchants were willing to pay out, and to buy their goods at whatever price the English merchant saw suitable to
charge. On top of all that they were still taxed for the ship. This was called the Ship Tax English government shouldn’t be
treating their people this way just because they are a 3 month trip away over water. These people still originated from England,
their government should have cared for them more.
_____Nevertheless another tax came along. It was called the, “quitrent.” This is the origin of the modern system of land taxes
in Virginia. The quitrent was a land tax that the King originally imposed and that was regulated by acts of Parliament. The
basic English land laws under which the people of colonial Virginia gained title to their land required the owners to pay to the
English government a quitrent of two shillings for each hundred acres of land. If a landowner failed to pay the quitrent for a
specific number of years, the English government had the right to take back the land and grant it or sell it to another person.
The money raised by this tax went into the royal treasury and was used to pay the expenses of the royal government in the
colony. The money being gained from these taxes were going right back to the government officials. The New World people
weren’t receiving any benefit from these taxes.
_____Taxes in Virginia had gotten worse, even when the colony was in grave danger from all of the Native American attacks,
Governor Berkeley didn’t let the people kill Indians. One of the reasons for this is because Governor Berkeley was gaining
personal wealth from trading with the Indians. With all of the selfishness of the government, it really looked like that their own
government was against them. Governor Berkeley tried making it better but in the wrong way, in the form of a unjust tax. The
hearth tax shows this. The hearth tax was an attempt to spread the suffering of the people. The heath tax was to charge
people according to their occupation. The tax was to create money for the army. Governor Berkeley wanted to make the people
safer with an army but it was hurting them more with the money they were paying.
_____Even that Governor Berkeley had good intentions with the hearth tax, he without a doubt was still looking for ways to
benefit himself. The way he did this without taxes was that he did not protect the new settled Virginia people from the savage
Indians that were ruthlessly killing them. These Indians were killing indentured servants in planting fields but William Berkeley
didn’t do anything about it because he wanted to keep having the people trading with the Indians because he benefited from
it. Some would argue that the only reason why Berkeley did this was because he wanted the Native Americans to just get along
to build the economy. Based on all that I’ve said before this, we all know Berkeley was thinking is, “Money talks.” Meaning that
money is the only thing that is going to show his power, so that’s what he was headed for.
_____One man that was sick of the corruption in the government and the murderous Indians, his name was Nathaniel Bacon.
He had sympathy for his fellow colonists and decided to take a stand against the Indians after they had killed a servant in his
plantation. He took a stand for his colony and chose to call them on it. He was devoted to the pure patriotic liberty principle.
Nathaniel Bacon did this by writing his own letter of complaints to King James. It was called, Nathaniel Bacon’s, ‘Declaration of
the people.’
_____The following June Nathaniel Bacon assembled a group of five hundred men leading them into Jamestown in what comes
to be known as bacon’s Rebellion. Nathaniel bacon had many supporters of his rebellion such as the Virginia planters. The
Virginia planters supported this because their indentured servants were being killed in the planter fields.
_____This rebellion and unjust taxes of Virginia relates to the present. Our government now is charging us with taxes that
people don’t want to pay also. Such as how some of our taxes go to the low income society. I disagree with this tax because of
how most people are just too lazy to get a job. People like this use the government to their advantage, they will use food
stamps and other supports from the government and use their own money for things that are unnecessary. The best example I
can give about this was when I was out in the parking lot at Wal-mart pushing carts as I sometimes do on the job. It was a
cold morning and there was a little fog in the air. As I was pushing these carts inside I happened to look back behind my
shouder to make sure there was no cars behind me before I made a wide turn. When I looked back I saw a new BMW 745Li. I
was very impressed with the car because I know it’s the largest luxury sedan BMW makes. I continued to the door with the
carts as I was still impressed with the car. I saw a Mexican lady and her 3 children come out of the car. I remember saying to
myself, “lucky,” as I saw them hop out. A little while later as I’m passing through the line of checkouts with the annoying
dinging I hear every time a item is checked, I see the same lady pocking around with the ATM machine. As I walk by the lady,
her daughter who was about ten years old or so asked me how to use the ATM machine for food stamp credit. I had no idea
what she wanted me to do so I directed her towards a manger as she is translating for her mom. As I happened to spot them
going back into their luxury car I was actually angry. Angry at the fact that money that I pay through taxes coming out of my
pay check and taxes from every day items actually helped that lady pay for her food. I saw absolutely no way that lady would
deserve to drive that 80,000 dollar car as she uses the state’s taxes to feed herself and her children. These taxes should be

The English government was corrupted and the English governor William Berkeley in Virginia shows it. It was started in 1693 when William Berkeley was appointed governor of Virginia. At the time he was a well respected man, but over time he became more and more greedy as his personality characteristics changed. In the 1600’s Virginia was suffering under England’s government horrendously. The English government was enduring them with taxes that served no purpose, other than to prosper. So that’s why I say, Bacon’s rebellion was the effect of a clash of wrongs and mishaps caused by unjust government with public security, and unsuitable taxes.
Back in 1645 Virginia had a poll tax that replaced the property tax. The poll tax was to tax people based on their income, but the English government did quite the opposite. The poor were being taxed more than the rich. In document #7 of the royal commissioners narrative states, “ [W]hereas there are some great persons both in honor rich in Estate and have several ways of gains and profit [that] are exempted from paying Levies and the poorest inhabitants being compelled to pay the great taxes which we are burdened with.” This means that people with a lot of land would be taxed less than the people without because they had more ways of earning profit. I think in this situation it was not only wrong to tax the poor more than the rich, but it was also stupid. If the English government were to tax the rich more, they would get more money out of them. This is only one of the worst things the government did to its people, but not the only one.
Another tax that the English government compelled on the Virginians was trade taxes, such as the poll trade tax. English government shouldn’t be treating their people this way just because they are a 3 month trip away over water. Taxes in Virginia had gotten worse, even when the colony was in grave danger from all of the Native American attacks, Governor Berkeley didn’t let the people kill Indians. One of the reasons for this is because Governor Berkeley was gaining person wealth from trading with the Indians. With all of the selfishness of the government, it really looked like that their own government was against them.
Looking aside from all of these taxes, governor Berkeley without a doubt was still looking for ways to benefit himself. The way he did this without taxes was that he did not protect the new settled Virginia people from the savage Indians that were ruthlessly killing them. These Indians were killing indentured servants in planting fields but William Berkeley didn’t do anything about it because he wanted to keep having the people trading with the Indians because he benefited from it. It was called, Nathaniel Bacon’s, ‘Declaration of the people.’

To me the pictures were stating that white people treated blacks like sub human-beings. They saw black people as inferior and only worth labor and money. In the picture of the naked black people signified that they were stripped of their identity. It was cruel how they were whipped for not eating. If i were in that position i would be glad not to feed people food, it would save me money and i'd get more for myself. With the lack of space in the ships sounds discussing. After 3 months down there with barley any room to move, with the stench of dead people and barf it wouldn't be very pleasant at all.

"They say Bacon's Rebellion....." re-done
When it comes to the topic of Bacon's Rebellion, most of us will readily agree that it was a recolt against the english government and their laws and restrictions in the new land. Where this agreement usualy ends however is on the question of if Nathaniel Bacon went on a killing spree against the native americans which could be seen as unnecessary. Where as some are convinced that the standard way of thinking about Nathaniel Bacon's Rebellion is that he was against the government because they were not providing the security against the indians as needed. It is often said that the actions of Nathaniel Bacon was a statement of the people.
One implication of Zinn and Steoff of Bacon's Rebellion is that they did not see that Nathaniel Bacon as a man for his people but more of a selfish man that just wanted to kill native americans so that they would stop stealing his crops and/or goods. Zinn and Steoff expressed this idea in their story, 'A Young People's History of the United States.' Here are their exact words "He probably cared more about fighting indians than helping the poor." Yet on the other hand, Nathaniel Bacon should have been seen as a leader when it came to revolting against the english. With that being said, from the text of A Young People's History of the United States says that, " Bacon's Rebellion brought together groups from the lower classes, they started an uprising because they were angry about the way that the colony was being run." If I were to attend Stanford, my education would be much higher. It is a tremendously prestigious university, well respected and known in America.
When i graduate from Stanford University School of Surgery, I hope that my patients would see me as a trustworthy, dependable doctor. I would hope that graduating from such a well honorable school would give my patients reassuring.
With Stanford being my favorite college, and my heart set on going to there, my hopes of graduating from there is not my only goal with Stanford. I see Stanford University as an opportunity to learn, make new discoveries, and share knowledge. Once I have completed my dreams of being a surgeon, I would hope to come back to Stanford to teach the new generation of medical discoverers.

I will admit that I was late for my workshop, because i honestly completely forgot about it! :) I was probably to busy talking with my boys from Stanford. :) Anyhow, I did manage to attend the last 10 minutes or so of the workshop discussing college essays. In that last ten minutes, this lady was PREACHING the importance of proof reading and not relying on spell check. Her closing statement in that workshop was the cheer, "PROOF READ! PROOF READ! PROOF READ!"
At the National College Fair the most useful information was wether my credits from early college would be accepted.
My main question that would remain unanswered would be, how much do my previous grades in high school weigh in when it's compared to my current GPA? In other words, how much does it matter if i didn't do as well in my last two years as I'm doing now?
My next phase of my educational and career planning process is getting organized with my materials needed to apply to colleges, such as studying for the SAT and ACT, figuring out what my essay is going to be about, what am i gonna do if i have to move out of state for school? how will I pay for school, food & board, if I'm not able to have enough time to work?

The Text Analysis of the Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was an important document that set the foundation of our country's government. It was written by those to be governed on the Mayflower back in November 1620. The writers are representing not only themselves, but the settlers of the New World. It was written to establish fair and equal laws and to be free of english laws. Also to establish better ordering, preservation, law, ordinances, acts, and constitutions. They most likely wanted this because of the taxes they were getting charged for but they had no benefit to them, yet alone had anything to do with them. They saw no reason that they should be governed by people that were thousands of miles away. The compact determined authority inside the settlement. These new settlers on the ship were writing to, "The Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James." In this compact the writers were representing the settlers of the New World. This compact is not asking in any way request of approval but as a statement with no questions asked. The settlers justification was that the english government had their hands too deep in their pockets without much to offer them. Once the Mayflower Compact was written it was then signed by all forty-one male adult passenger of the Mayflower.

Thoughts of the Political Economy of the Body
To be completely honest when i first read this the first thing I thought of was the army, then i thought of slavery. I think that most things we do can be related to this quote.

American Tobacco and European Consumers
Tobacco became big in the English colonies. Tobacco was used to smoke, sniff, chew, drink, and even use for enemas. Desire to smoke was the only commercial value. Despite it’s popularity, King James did not smoke. He believed it was harmful. Another reason why King James didn’t believe in smoking is because it was an Indian custom. King James rational was that if they smoked like wild, godless, slavish Indians, why don’t they dress and act like them too? This is what he said to convince people to not smoke.
Physicians called tobacco the wonder drug. They believed that this was a, “holy drug.” They insisted that this was not only a drug for the sick but for also the healthy. It was not easy for people to have this miracle drug, it was an expensive habit to have in the seventeenth century because it was scarce. But although for being scarce, it spawned new industries, new habits, and new forms of social life. The people smoked nearly everywhere, including taverns, in smoking clubs, around dinner tables, and in bed.
Later on in the eighteenth century, the European consumers started a new trend of, “snuff.” It was not only considered fashionable but healthful.

Response to the arguments and ideas of The Cruelties of the Spaniards Committed in America
My own view is that that Spaniards had absolutely no right to treat the native americans how they did. Though i concede that the native americans were helpful to the spaniards, I still maintain that native americans might not have fully understood their importance in helping the spaniards. For example, native americans may not have understood the fact that europe was rapidly becoming over populated, thus maybe the spaniards being pressured to quickly take gold and land before it would be claimed. Although some might object the fact that this method of forced participation was unnecessary, I reply that it was necessary to the spaniards, they were growing impatient with the lack of progress that they were making. Or maybe it's not the lack of progress, but the expectations of the native americans were too high for people who were effeminate. This issue is important because it's not like the spaniards had nothing to offer the native americans, they would eventually travel to europe to see their modern culture, just not right now. It was a big new world to explore for spaniards, but an even bigger world for native americans to explore. The native americans needed to realize that they would be seeing a modern society and could benefit from it.

My Writing Philosophy
My writing philosophy is to advance my writing. I want to bring myself to a new level of writing to the point that it will look and sound professional. For me, I want writing to become second nature, to the point that it is fun for me and not such a greater challenge. My writing philosophy is to think outside the box on my topics of writing. I want to be looking at not only the subject itself, but what effects it and the factors that play into the effects. I want to use a broader vocabulary in my writing and have a better sentence fluency.

He says that traditional university is useless because teacher's mold students and force them to "swallow what they give them." and he doesn't think students can learn well that way.
He says that english composition is the only class that you express your own thoughts and feelings on ideas.

PSEC entry essay (effects of bottled water)
I am passionate about the negative effects that bottled water in plastic containers
has on our environment. Bottled Water is a $22 Billion-a-year industry and comes in
about 700 different brands, and 40% starts as tap water. People believe bottled water is
better than tap water. The Worldwide Fund for Nature, the world’s largest environmental
organization, reported that Bottled Water may be no safer or healthier than tap water. In
many countries it sells for up to 1,000 times the price. They also report that Bottled Water
is harming the environment and wildlife. They report 1.5 million tons of plastic are used
each year to bottle water. That plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil each year to
produce. Toxic chemicals released during the manufacture and disposable of bottles
releases gases that contribute to climate change.
Even though the plastic used to bottle water is recyclable, over 80% are thrown in
the garbage and littered so, it ends up in the ocean. This causes a risk to marine life, and
kills birds and fish that mistake it for food. People feel like they can’t go anywhere or do
anything without taking bottled water with them. Every day I see people carrying bottled
water with them and I see empty bottles tossed on the sidewalks.
There is a simple alternative to bottled water: buy a Stainless Steel Thermos. Even if
people reused their plastic bottles and refilled them, it would be a great help to the
environment. People can also buy inexpensive Carbon Filters and filter tap water if they
don’t like the taste of tap water.
It takes up to 1,000 years for plastic to biodegrade, therefore I say, don’t buy bottled
water.
